Mary Greenwell is a true British icon of style and beauty. One of the worlds’s most sought after and influential makeup artists, her power over the fashion and beauty industries is undisputed. From creating new trends on the catwalk to winning numerous beauty awards, Mary continues to be at the top of her game.
Marys journey began in the 70’s having moved to LA (after an exciting trans-America road trip, if you meet her ask her about this one day!) and began working for IIana Harkavi, owner of legendary cosmetic company Il Makiage. Mary’s first client was a then 14 year old Brooke Shields, who was required to be beautified before a shoot with photographer Francesco Scavullo. This was the beginning of a successful lifelong career for Mary. In 1984 she moved from America back to London then onto Paris where she started working with some young up and coming models Christy Turlington, Stephanie Seymour and Cindy Crawford, she was the vital ingredient of the catwalk phenomenon which was the birth of the Supermodel. By the time she was frequently being asked by the likes of Grace Coddington to create Vogue covers and shoots. It was after she had six Vogue covers back to back that she realised that she had carved herself an incredible career and was firmly at the helm.
Mary has worked with the biggest names in the world, beautifying the faces of some of the most famous women in the world, from Princess Diana, Uma Thurman, Keira Knightley, Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth Hurley and Kate Moss to name a few. Along with creating iconic looks such as the ‘fresh faced no makeup’ look in the 80’s for Romeo Gigli’s catwalk show. Along with celebrities Mary has also worked alongside fashion power houses from Chanel, Versace, Valentino, Comme de Garçons, DKNY, Donna Karen, Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein and alongside associations and contracts with beauty brands such as Armani, Chanel, Christian Dior, Guerlain, Sisley, Shiseido, Elizabeth Arden and Estée Lauder.
